Considering CSAs

If you are interested in joining a farm CSA, you are probably beginning to talk with friends to see who they recommend.

A CSA is community supported agriculture where a farm offers a subscription and a customer offers an up front payment to provide seed money to the farmer in return for a weekly box of produce, or other items. I like the link to a direct farm and have signed up for another year with Vollmer’s Farms. The strawberries are a big attraction.

There are a number of different options. One I heard of recently was CarolinaFarms. Joseph Allen of Carolina Farms says:

We service Wake, Harnett, Durham, Cumberland, and surrounding counties.  We are a year round co-op that works with several farms across the state of North Carolina. We offer home delivery of produce and meats and are working to expand our list everyday. You can find more about Carolina Farms at www.carolinafarms.org

There are other brokers that work with several different farms and then offer home delivery like Papa Spuds and the Produce Box.
Farm to Fork Meat offers a modified CSA program with locally raised ethical meat all year round. Arrowhead Beef is offering a meat CSA. The farm is at 3230 Hwy 86 North, Hillsborough, NC 27278. Contact Adam Huskins at 919-452-2871. Rare Earth Farms is family owned and operated by NC natives who share all-natural beef with their family, friends and neighbors. Mann Mullen who farms in Bunn and Karl Hudson whose farm is in Zebulon  joined together to form Rare Earth Farms.
In Durham, a group of Duke students have created a seafood CSA, (www.walking-fish.org)

Let me know if you have had success with other CSAs in our community.

  1. Sounds like you have some interesting options in NC. I’m especially jealous of the seafood CSA! Good cross section of information here.
