The Winkler Bakery at Old Salem is one of the few food-related historic sites that I know of in NC. The bakery is part of the Old Salem museum complex, founded in 1950. The bakery has been in operation since 1800 except for a brief period in the mid-20th century. Christian Winkler took over the bakery in 1807.
Lots of folks think of visiting Old Salem for the holidays. There are a series of classes you can take part in December 1, 6:00-9:00 p.m. Each class is $25. One of the classes is the Holiday Sampler of Winkler Sweets.
You can join Old Salem staff to bake traditional goodies from the 19th century receipt book of Christian Winkler. Participants will make and taste Cherry Pudding, Filled Rolls, and Crispy Cinnamon Waffles.
They’ve only got room for a few folks. Sign up early if you want to participate.
