Well on their way to beating last year’s record, hundreds of community volunteers and students from NC State University, East Carolina University, and Meredith College packaged 550,516 meals on the first day of University Million Meal Week 2009.
The life-saving meals will be used to feed school children in some of the world’s most impoverished areas of Haiti, Kenya and Nicaragua.
“The resounding success of last year’s University Million Meal Event made us believe we could do it again. The scale of this event draws much needed attention to the war against hunger and provides life-saving meals to the world’s most destitute,” said Ray Buchanan, president and founder of Stop Hunger Now.
University Million Meals Week is being hosted at four locations by N.C. State University and East Carolina University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and UNC-Wilmington. This year’s UMMW event concludes with packaging events in Chapel Hill and Wilmington.
